Liposuction Is Not Just For The Rich And Famous
Anyone ever envied those stick-thin models that grace every catwalk and can slide into any dress? I know I have. But I know something else—these models have a secret, one that’s called liposuction.
Before you stop me to explain that the surgery is just for the rich and famous, because of the liposuction costs involved, let me shock you. More than 500,000 surgeries are performed every year in the US alone, and this makes the treatment the most popular type of cosmetic surgery in the nation.1 Besides, models ought to have a body to die for before they start raking in the big bucks, so it shouldn’t rip a hole in the pockets now, should it?
Liposuction dates back to Charles Dujarier, a French doctor, who hacked off portions of fat manually. Don’t worry; the deadly procedure dead-ended when it resulted in a patient’s death. Back then, liposuction cost a fortune, but today, advanced improvements, led by gynecologist Giorgio Fischer, set the pattern for liposuction, which involves the removal of fat from under the skin with the use of a vacuum-suction cannula (a hollow pen-like instrument). Sometimes, an ultrasonic probe, which breaks up the fat into small pieces, may be used, and that fat is then removed by suction.1 Since one is under local or general anesthesia, there is no feeling of pain.
Although a simple procedure to get that elusive body, be warned: liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, but rather, a body-reshaping one, so you can’t expect to thin down with just one session. Usually, people loose about 5kgs of fat, but the good news is, the contours will be improved in the areas suctioned. There are the risks associated with surgery, but since this is a minor one, it’s not a big deal. With a few painkillers, the post-operative pain is mild, and hospitalization is generally not necessary. Remember that liposuction prices may vary.
Check beforehand whether the surgery is covered by your health insurance, as it is a type of cosmetic surgery and is not generally included. The rate generally differs from doctor to doctor, but the average liposuction cost in a body part ranges from $2,000 to $7,000.2 Adding additional body parts may cost more.
However, it’s really a small price to pay for that dream like body, especially after many unsuccessful attempts at removing the fat by diet and exercise. Champagne wishes and caviar dreams3 to that hourglass figure!
